STEM RESEARCH

As of 2023, throughout my artistic process, particularly while exploring Afrofuturistic themes, I often approach paintings in terms of speculative science. This is mostly a result of me working in electrical engineering as a CAD draftsman after graduation and subsequently discovering my passion for physics. Despite the fact that I’ve already been exploring Afrofuturism since 2020, my newfound science interests have been routinely following me into the studio to inform my paintings. These paintings begin as questions, thought experiments, or strange little “what-ifs” that arise while sketching, painting, or simply observing the world. Some of these concepts evolve into deeper models or hypotheses about how things could work in different systems of computing, complexity, cognition and more.

This page is a growing archive of my personal science writing—working papers, notes, and thought experiments that live alongside my artwork. Within the last 6 months I’ve felt that creativity & curiosity are a double-sided coin, and publishing these writings reflect my sincere engagement with the nature of reality and how it might be bent, reimagined, or re-examined in future frameworks.

  • note from our editor (me derek) I will upload some science writings by the end of april! currently painting :)
